2.7 Keep in mind…
There is a shift happening in the business world. More and more, CEOs of major companies are starting to recognize that social purpose is an important and necessary part of business. It’s no longer a “nice-to-have”, in order to be competitive, there must be purpose in the work. There is a new vision that focuses on a broader set of stakeholders including customers, workers, suppliers and communities in addition to shareholders. Businesses around the world are redefining their role in society to foster business and societal success. They are adopting a “social purpose” to navigate turbulent times, and attract and engage top talent and customers. The purpose in fact makes it possible to insert the interests of stakeholders in the strategic formulation process, identifying social issues to be resolved, leveraging the business model and transforming it through the discipline of shared value.
Today it becomes of fundamental importance for companies all over the world to standardize and align the ethical and sustainable growth objectives of organizations with those of the nations in which they operate. Indeed, it is necessary to bring strategies and operations into line with universal principles on human rights, work, environment and the fight against corruption and to take actions that promote these goals in companies. Ethics, therefore, as a business management tool like the usual management principles and alongside corporate social responsibility seen as an essential element. Business ethics also concerns the creation of an ethically healthy work environment within the organization and the modeling of ethical behavior through leadership. All without forgetting the need to introduce ethical principles even in the behaviors more closely related to finance and business administration. Sustainability represents, in today’s society, an opportunity for the creation of value and a factor of greater competitiveness. The concept has merged with business ethics, highlighting the urgency of abandoning a business idea dominated by the objective of generating wealth and underlining the centrality of the business for sustainable progress. According to this interpretation, sustainability and “Corporate Social Responsibility” are linked by a functional link defining the features of a new business model according to which there can be no creation of value if in addition to the economic profile, the environmental and social context of reference is not considered. A model in which non-financial communication tools take on particular importance, designed to monitor and communicate the sustainability objectives pursued by the companies.
